Costco egg recall: FDA issues withdrawal of 10,800 cartons over Salmonella risk

Sources say the recall is now classified as ‘Class I’ or harmful to the maximum degree.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated the “Costco egg recall” a month ago due to potential contamination with Salmonella.

An announcement was published and the regulatory body had initially planned to remove nearly 260,000 eggs from circulation and consumption.

According to recent updates on the matter, this situation has now been classified as a “Class 1” risk, which is their highest possible alert. It suggests severe health consequences for a person if exposed to the product, and in extreme cases death.

Handsome Brook Farms, the company where Costco gets its cage-free eggs from, voluntarily informed the FDA that eggs that weren’t meant for retail distribution were accidentally packed and distributed for sale.

The product was sold under the brand name Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs at 25 stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee on November 22nd. Shortly after, the eggs at Costco were recalled.

“The eggs with UPC 9661910680 are packaged in plastic cartons labeled Kirkland Signature on the top,” the FDA clarified. “The recall only applies to units with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of Jan 5, 2025, printed on the side. No other products are impacted.”

Customers are urged not to consume these eggs, exchange them at Costco for a refund, or safely discard them. When infected, symptoms for healthy individuals involve fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

However, in children, the elderly, and people with weak immunity, severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis have been noted.

Until now, no infections have been recorded. The company has “revised supply chain controls” and “implemented retraining” to avoid future anomalies.

Any infected individuals are advised to stop consuming the product. Furthermore, utensils that were used for handling eggs raw must be washed using soap and warm water, which is what the FDA suggested.

For any questions, the retailer has left options for contacting them open, through phone at 646-733-4532, ext. 1 (Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 6 PM EST) and email at [email protected].
