Ahmedabad: New developments have emerged in the case related to the Air India plane crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on June 12 last year. London-based law firm Stewarts has proposed that Air India waive its legal right to seek additional compensation claims from the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.

According to the proposal, families would be asked to sign a final settlement agreement confirming that they will not pursue any present or future legal action against Air India or aircraft manufacturer Boeing. The agreement would permanently withdraw all legal claims related to the crash.

Following the accident, Air India had offered interim compensation of ₹3.25 lakh to each victim’s family. Earlier this month, the airline reportedly announced total compensation of ₹3.1 crore. Legal representatives have stated that, under the settlement terms, some families may receive an additional ₹3.10 lakh as part of the final resolution.

If accepted, the settlement would require families to release the airline from all legal liabilities and agree not to file any further lawsuits in any court.

Meanwhile, investigations into the crash are still ongoing. During the inquiry, lawsuits were filed in London and the United States alleging liability against both Air India and Boeing.

A legal team representing 130 victims’ families has opposed the proposed settlement. The lawyers argue that the investigation is not yet complete and that liability has not been formally established. They have stated that asking families to permanently waive their right to seek damages at this stage would be inappropriate.

Air India has maintained that it has provided final compensation and round-the-clock support to affected families, and that it remains committed to assisting them.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner involved in the crash was carrying 242 people at the time of the accident. All passengers died, including 53 British nationals.
