If you’re building your own home, you might think that basic stairs or ladders are adequate to get you up or down a floor.
Find out how to make a small, mob-proof spiral staircase in Minecraft with easy-to-follow directions. I’ll include materials, exact steps, tips for mob safety, and ideas for variations so you can adapt it to any theme. Good for building things to stay alive and for creative projects.
Why go with a Spiral Staircase?
It takes up less floor space than straight steps or entire stair towers.
- Looks nice in towers, bases, and small residences.
- Simple to put together with regular things.
- Works great with lighting, railings, and decorations.
Basic compact spiral materials
You can use any kind of whole block or slab. Some examples of materials are:
- 64 blocks made of stone, wood, or bricks
- 32 slabs of the same substance
- 12 fences or walls for handrails (optional)
- 12 torches or lanterns to light the way
- 1 or 2 signs (optional) to keep water and mobs away
You can make the numbers smaller if you want a shorter staircase.
Step by step: a little 1×1 spiral around a centre column (good for survival)
This design is small enough to fit in a 3×3 space and has a central column that you can climb around.
Pick a spot and clear a 3×3 area:
Put a mark on the centre block where the column will go.
To build the central column:
Put a solid block in the middle and stack it as high as the amount of floors you want to connect. For example, if you want a height of 10 blocks, stack 10 blocks on top of each other.
Choose a corner to start in:
Choose one of the four blocks next to the centre block on the ground level. That will be the first step up.
Put the first stair block:
On the next block, which should be a whole block or a slab. This is the first step. We shall build in a spiral that goes up and to the right or to the left.
Step up and turn:
Move one block around the centre in a clockwise direction. Put a full block one block higher than the last step.
Do this pattern again: move one block around the centre and place one block one level up. This makes the spiral rise.
Keep going until you get to the height you want:
Each block you add should be one level higher than the last one and one block more around the centre. The spiral will go around the column in a helical shape.
Add slabs to make the transitions smoother:
To make the steps look better and go more smoothly, put a slab on the top half of each step or a slab leading into the next block.
Add lighting and handrails:
Put up walls or fences along the outside edge to keep people from falling. To stop mobs from spawning, put candles or lanterns on the rails or every few stairs.
Make mob-safe (survival tip):
To keep mobs from getting to the stairs, put slabs on the top faces or torches on the steps so they are always illuminated. You may also put up signage in a way that doesn’t hinder water flow or mobs, but still looks nice.
Test and change:
Check for awkward jumps by walking up and down the stairs. Use more slabs to make the climb easier. Put slabs on the lower half of some blocks to lessen the effective step height.
Another option is a 2×2 spiral with an open middle shaft for elevators or water
Instead of a single column, make a 2×2 centre shaft.
Put steps or slabs along one inner face, following the same clockwise sequence as above.
You can put a water elevator in the middle or windows to see outside because the shaft is wider.
Changes and enhancements to the decor
For a mediaeval effect, use stone bricks, cracked ones, and iron bars to make it look like a castle. Put lamps in the wall niches.
Modern spiral with glass: For steps, use quartz or concrete, and for railings, use glass panes. For steady lighting, add sea lanterns.
If you want a working elevator, you need to replace part of the steps with a piston-lift mechanism. That is more advanced and needs a good understanding of redstone.
Minecart rail option: For a pretty track, put rails on the spiral, but be careful of derailment on tight turns.
Things to Avoid
Too steep: Players will have to jump all the time if each step goes up two blocks. Use slabs for milder slopes or keep one-block vertical climbs.
Bad lighting: Mobs spawn on dark steps. At least one light every four to six blocks.
No barrier on the outside: If you don’t have rails, you’ll fall when you fight or run. Put up walls or fences.
Material mismatch: If you mix materials without meaning to, the stairs will look chaotic. Choose a colour scheme and stick to it.
