Kuldhara village is located approx. 17 km west from the city of Jaisalmer. Today it’s nothing but ruins, but three centuries ago it was a thriving settlement. Before abandoning the place, the villagers cursed the land so that no one could ever settle there again. When Kuldhara Village Was Founded?
Founded in 1291, Kuldhara and 83 nearby villages flourished in the desert, producing good crops and living prosperously. A community famous for their skill in agriculture and trade.
What is the Haunted Kuldhara Village Story?
The mystery begins in 1825. Kuldhara was home to the prosperous Paliwal Brahmins, with planned streets, temples and houses. Along with Paliwal Brahmins, around 84 other villages were also settled near them. According to the legend, overnight the entire population of the village vanished. No one saw them leave, also no one knows where they went.
One popular version of the Kuldhara village haunted story says the villagers fled to escape the cruel Diwan of Jaisalmer, Salim Singh also known as Zalim Singh, had his evil eyes set on a village girl.
He demanded to marry her, threatening to punish the villagers with unbearable taxes if they refused. The Paliwals valued their dignity and freedom too much to bend to his will. Instead of giving in, the entire community made a bold choice, to abandon their home and disappeared without a trace.
What is The Curse of Kuldhara Village?
Before leaving, they placed a curse on the land: no one would ever be able to live in Kuldhara again.
That curse seems to have held. To this day, the village remains deserted. Locals believe those who tried to settle there were driven away by strange and frightening experiences.
The ruins still stand, with crumbling homes, temples, and streets reflecting the architectural skill of the Paliwals.
Is Kuldhara Village Worth Visiting Today?
Yes, why not, today it’s known as a heritage site by the state archaeology department. Kuldhara has become one of India’s most famous ghost villages. If you love history, stories of mystery places and want to experience something out of the ordinary, then you got it covered. Just remember to visit the place at day time, at dark it’s not allowed to enter.
