Most Popular Bhangarh Fort Stories
1. Story of a Tantrik:
The story goes by a Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh, admired as the most beautiful woman in Rajasthan. As soon as she turned eighteen, marriage proposals poured in from royal families across neighboring regions.
Also there lived a Tantrik named Singhia, well skilled in his abhichara (practice of mantras and spells), who fell in love with the Princess. Even after knowing their worlds could never meet, he had a longing for her.
One fine day Tantrik spotted the Princess’ maid purchasing scented oil from the market. Seizing the chance, he cast a spell on the oil, intending that whoever touched it would fall under his control.
Princess was no ordinary woman, she saw through his trickery, shattered the scented oil bottle against a stone. And the magic turned against the master. The rock rolled toward Singhia and crushed him.
With his dying breath, the Tantrik cursed Bhangarh, vowing that no soul would ever find peace there. Soon after, war reached the fort, and Princess Ratnavati lost her life in battle. The curse seemed to take hold, and fear spread. People started abandoning the place.
2. Ascetic Bala Nath:
An ascetic baba known as Bala Nath, who lived in Bhangarh. When king Madho Singh decided to build the fort, he first thought of taking permission from Bala Nath. He agreed but there was one catch, shadow of the fort should never fall on his house.
The condition was respected for years and the fort stood unharmed. But later, one of Madho Singh’s successors expanded the structure to strengthen its defenses. Thus the promise broke, and according to local belief, the curse took effect, and the fort was doomed soon after.
Skeptics, however, view these tales as myths. They believe the real reason behind the abandonment lies in history. During the famine of 1783 in Ajabgarh, the settlement was deserted and never resettled. Over time, the fort crumbled into ruins. Surrounded by dense forest, it became home to wild animals instead of people.
Others suggest that plague or famine forced the people to leave.
These legends, along with the more practical explanations, remain the most widely shared accounts of why Bhangarh Fort was abandoned.
